Camping by the sea in La Manche

Whether you’re traveling in a tent, camper van or mobile home, staying just a few minutes’ walk from the beach means you can enjoy the coastline without a car. Here, the tides punctuate the day, the iodized air accompanies every moment and the immediate proximity of the seaside transforms your vacation into a camping in La Manche a simple, natural and authentic break.

Where to find the best seaside campsites in the Manche?
In Basse-Normandie, the Manche coastline stretches for over 350 kilometers. From one end to the other, the landscapes change radically: large family beaches, wild cliffs, authentic harbors, bays with spectacular tides.
On the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, Barneville-Carteret has everything families are looking for when they book a seaside campsite in the English Channel.
Barneville-Carteret: the family reference
In Barneville-Carteret, where our Les Bosquets campsite is located, the sea is a 5-minute walk away. Not by car.
La Grande Plage, with its Blue Flag label, stretches over 10 kilometers of fine sand as far as Portbail. Here you can sail, paddle, sea kayak and windsurf. For a seaside vacation, it’s hard to find a more complete setting.
At low tide, miles of shoreline can be explored for fishing, walking and beach games. On a clear day, Jersey and Guernsey can be seen on the horizon.
The Hatainville dunes, protected by the Conservatoire du Littoral, border this coastline for several kilometers. One of the largest dune massifs in Europe, entirely preserved.
Other seaside destinations in Manche
The rest of the Manche coastline offers very different atmospheres, depending on what you’re looking for.
To the north, the Cap de la Hague and the Nez de Jobourg: towering cliffs, windswept moorlands, small ports like Port-Racine frozen in time. A coastline for lovers of raw nature and solitude, rarely visited even in July.
To the east, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Barfleur: elegant ports, discreet beaches and an authentic maritime atmosphere. Barfleur is listed as one of France’s most beautiful villages. The choice of vacationers who shun busy resorts.
To the south, Agon-Coutainville and Granville: well-equipped seaside resorts, large beaches, shops within walking distance. Turnkey holidays for families – and from Granville, Mont-Saint-Michel is less than an hour away.

Choosing your seaside campsite
Three things to check before you book. Things you’ll wish you’d looked at when you got there.
The actual distance from the beach
Not the one advertised in the title, the real thing. With small children, a cooler, buoys and an overflowing beach bag, one kilometer of walking under the July sun is well worth it. Some campsites are right on the edge, just a few minutes’ walk away, others much less so.
Beach type
A large supervised beach with fine sand, ideal for young children. A wild cove accessible at low tide, perfect for adventurers. It’s not the same day and it’s not the same holiday.
The sea for the deep end, the heated pool for the rest
And if you’re bringing the kids, don’t forget the heated swimming pool. In the Channel, seawater hovers around 17 to 19°C in August. Pleasant for a dip, less so for a two-hour swim. A campsite with heated pool by the seaA campsite with a heated pool by the sea is the kind of place where children can’t wait to get out and parents can read their books.
Les Bosquets campsite 400 m from the beach: the real seaside
Looking for a campsite near the sea in the Manche to enjoy the beach without taking the car?
The 3-star Les Bosquets campsite is located 400 metres from Carteret beach (La Potinière), which is just a few minutes’ walk away.

The beach is protected from the wind by the Cap de Carteret. The sea view stretches from Portbail to Carteret, facing the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey.
For a wilder atmosphere, Hatainville beach, on the way to Cap de Carteret, is easily accessible. It’s a well-known surfing spot in La Manche. The Hatainville dune massif is one of the largest in Europe,

Seaside activities in La Manche
The Manche coast has no shortage of playgrounds. Here’s what campers do most, once they’ve landed by the sea.
Fishing on foot
In La Manche, the tides uncover kilometers of beach twice a day. At low tide, cockles, clams, periwinkles and crabs are picked up with bare hands. No need for sophisticated equipment: a bucket, a knife and the tide tables are all you need. It’s the most popular activity on this coast, and often the most memorable for children.
The GR223 customs trail
The GR223 runs the length of the Manche coast. It can be walked for an hour or several days. The views from the headlands are some of the finest on the Normandy coast – cliffs, dunes, fishing ports and horizons opening out to sea. Bring sturdy shoes and check the weather forecast before setting off.
Paddle and sea kayak
Conditions are ideal in the morning, before the thermal wind picks up. The water is calm and the light low, perfect for sailing along the coast at water level. Several watersports centers offer half-day rentals on the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula.
Cycling on the coast
The Vélomaritime runs for dozens of kilometers along the Manche coast. From a seaside campsite, you can cycle to nearby beaches, ports and villages, without taking the car. Ideal for families with children – the terrain is flat on the west coast.
Channel Islands excursion
Jersey and Guernsey are visible from the Manche coast on a clear day. From the port of Carteret, the crossing to Jersey takes less than an hour. One day is enough to explore Saint-Hélier, the cliffs and the local markets. An excursion that completely changes the scale of the holiday – and one that few campers regret taking.
